Augusta est la capitale de l'État américain du Maine, siège du comté de Kennebec County, et le centre de la population pour le Maine [http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cenpop/statecenters.txt]. La population de la ville était 18 560 au recensement de 2000. Situé sur la rivière Kennebec, à la tête de la marée, il est le foyer de l'Université du Maine à Augusta. La région a été explorée par les membres de la colonie malheureuse Popham en Septembre 1607.
